All of these actions are visual only they have no gameplay impact. She sticks close to you, but might sit, read, eat, lean on a wall, use crafting stations (anvil, smelter, workbench, arcane enchanter, etc.), cook, or even mine ore veins. While the other followers act as if they are on an invisible leash, Serana behaves more like an independent person. She does not use one of the four personas of the base game (Imperial, Nord, Orc, or Arrogant). Serana does not behave like other followers. Her attire choice logic ignores the fact the she has no need for items that bestow cold resistance while she is a vampire. She might wear the attire you place in her inventory, although she completely ignores those included in the Arcane Accessories DLC. She dons a unique hood when outside, which visually obscures her headgear. Serana wears a Vampire Royal Armor and a pair of Vampire Boots. If you find her, you can recruit her, regardless of the location. After completing the Dawnguard campaign, she often roams Skyrim in search of adventure. After completing the Beyond Death quest, she can also be found in Valerica's study. If you choose the Volkihar Vampire Clan, however, you can find her at Volkihar Keep. If you join the Dawnguard, you can find her at Fort Dawnguard. Her main location during gameplay depends on your allegiance. In many ways, Serana is a unique follower. She also has a touch of self-deprecating humor and awareness. She's been taught to genuinely care about those who befriend her, but only so much as they prove worthwhile. She's built up these defenses because she has a quick temper and strong passion, so she doesn't let people get too close lest they fall victim to them.
She can deftly avoid difficult topics and turn the conversation back around into something you thought you wanted to talk about. She's naturally somewhat defensive, though not cold.
To prevent this from happening, her mother sealed her away in Dimhollow Crypt and keep her hidden from her father. A thousand years ago, her father became obsessed with a prophecy called the Tyranny of the Sun, which would require the blood of a pure-blooded vampire to block out the sun forever and allow vampires to reign supreme. Her mother taught her necromancy and other forms of magic, allowing her to become a powerful mage in her own right.
Even as a child, hers was a fairly lonely life. By vampire standards, her relationship with her mother was as loving and nurturing as it could be, given their circumstances. She had a very close relationship to her mother growing up, and distant from her father, though never against him. Upon introduction, she will know if you are a vampire or not, and she will ask you to take her to her home. She is the long lost daughter of Lord Harkon and Valerica, and is in possession of an Elder Scroll. Serana is a Nord vampire found inside a sarcophagus in Dimhollow Cavern.
